Raised in Kigali by a journalist father, Tharcisse Gatwa and a bank manager mother, Josephine Gatwa. Gatwa has two siblings. His educational background includes schooling at Boroughmuir High School and Dunfermline High School; graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Acting at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2013[1].
He grew up in a working-class area. He lived with his best friend and his mum, who runs a salon in Tottenham. From a young age, he was passionate about dancing and drama, but always saw himself going to university, until a teacher advised him to pursue something more creative instead. He played Mercutio in a production of Romeo & Juliet at Manchester’s Home Theatre after joining the Dundee Repertory Theatre as a graduate trainee[2]. He is the first person born outside the United Kingdom to play the 14th Doctor in Doctor Who (2005).
